Voussoir Chair

2022, ongoing

The design of the chair started as an exploration of minimal geometric profiles that could still provide an element of engagement through movement, such as rocking. My limitations in space and tools applied parameters that drove the development of the chairs ability to be disassembled flat, and reassembled by simple means of attachment.

The first chair utilized kerf cuts in a single sheet of plywood to structure the chair in a U shape. The fabric seat was used to hold the shape in tension. The kerf structure initially supported my weight, but failed when rocking was introduced.

The second chair iteration utilizes the same tension concept, but provides additional structure by using voussoir modules instead of kerf cuts, currently in study model phase
